With the Super Bowl this last week came new trailers for several different movies. Some of them were good, some were bad, and some I still don’t understand why anyone would sign off on the project.
Battleship
Release Date: May 18th
I was gonna put this as the last post but I’ll get the torture over with early instead. Here we have Battleship. That’s right; someone, somewhere decided it was a good idea to make a movie out of a board game that nobody plays fairly. What’s more scary is that people agreed. I know the writers didn’t have much to work with but an alien attack, really? I think it should have been naval war games personally but that’s why I don’t make the big bucks. Instead, we are treated with Transformers 4; or so everyone in the house that saw the trailer thought. Skip this one if you have a weak stomach.
Continue on to see more trailers. I promise, the rest won’t hurt as badly.
John Carter
Release Date: March 9th
You may not be aware of this but Taylor Kitsch actually has another movie coming out soon that isn’t Battleship. I know very little about the John Carter movie but I am pretty hyped up to see it. The beginning of the trailer is fairly unique, using different clips from the movie to spell out “John Carter” and if you only saw the ad in the Super Bowl you probably didn’t’ think much of it. Well, there is an extended version online that looks a lot better. It gives you a bit of an idea as to what is going on in the story along with some decent action shots. I feel this movie could go two directions. One, it becomes another Pirates of the Caribbean; or two, it becomes another Prince of Persia. I thought PoP was a fun flick but compared to the original PotC it did not live up to expectations that were put in place. I’m hoping that John Carter does so, or better yet has the ability to stand on it’s own two feet.
The Avengers
Release Date: May 4th
Showing a shortened trailer during the Super Bowl with an extended version being placed online seemed to be a theme this year. Along with John Carter, Marvel (who just happens to be owned by Disney) did the same thing with their Avengers trailer. The one shown during the big game wasn’t bad but it didn’t’ get me as excited as I was hoping for. The extended version shows the team interacting with one another, let’s you know they are up against what are probably the Skrull, get some banter between Loki and Tony Stark, and get some pretty nice shots of the Hulk. It looks great, as expected.
Amazing Spider-Man
Release Date: July 3rd
A trailer for the Amazing Spider Man was released online yesterday. It looks good but I don’t know if it has the right feel to it. It feels like just another comic book movie trying to inject itself into real life by being dark. I am also not a fan at all of how the Lizard looks, he just seems half man half lizard whereas I always think of him as more of a man suffering trapped inside of a giant lizard body. I also do not think that doing a retelling of the origin was necessary. I will say this however, the few lines of Spidey quips give me hope and I think Andrew Garfield will do a great job acting the part.
G.I. Joe: Retaliation
Release Date: June 29th
The new GI Joe TV Spot is a bit more strange than the others. It still looks great and it’s obvious that they are going with a real world feel for this one instead of the mech suits from the first, the quote at the beginning just feels a little forced. But, it has lots of action, Snake-Eyes with no lips, and a proper mask for Cobra Commander, so I’m still really looking forward to it.
The Hunger Games
Release Date: March 23rd
I am currently working on finishing reading through the Hunger Games trilogy. I’m about 1/4 of a way through Mockingjay right now though and am really looking forward to the Hunger Games movie. I hope that it is done justice and judging by the trailer it looks like it will be. You don’t get much action in the trailer but you do get to see a good amount of characters, and they all look great. It just does enough to tell you that this girl is volunteering for a fight to the death in place of her sister but if you’ve read the books you get hints of a few things more. Katniss being given the pin by Cinna, her interactions with Peeta, and being walked out as the girl on fire, to name a few.
The Dark Knight Rises
Release Date: July 20th
And, last but not least, we have The Dark Knight Rises. This is arguably the most anticipated to movie of the summer. Nolan’s swan song to the Batman franchise promises to be a good one and the trailer backs the hype up strongly. It’s got action, strong acting, the right amount of plot points to interest you without giving too much away. My biggest question is what part Joseph Gordon Levitt will be playing in the film. I think he would be a great Nightwing personally but the chances of that are slim. Only time will tell but I am centering a vacation at the end of summer before school starts back up around this movie, so that should tell you how excited I am to see it.
epic movies in 2012!! good for us movie-goers
Indeed. Last summer had a lot of really good ones too. It will be interesting to see how this one measures up.
Oh yeah! Last year was great – Transformers and Harry Potter on the list.
